What is PRP?
PRP, also known as platelet-rich plasma, is a substance that is derived from the patient’s own blood. When used for hair restoration, PRP therapy is a three-step process. This treatment can be combined with other hair restoration techniques, such as medication, to help enhance the results, or it can be used alone.
The PRP Therapy Process
First, the patient’s blood is drawn in routine blood draw. The sample is then spun at high speeds in a centrifuge to separate the different components. This step separates the blood into three layers, with platelet-rich plasma being one of those layers.
Once the PRP has been separated, it is then placed in a syringe and injected into the scalp. Only the areas that are in need of hair growth will receive an injection.
One of the biggest benefits of this treatment (besides hair regrowth) is the fact that PRP does not contain any foregin substances, so you won’t have to worry about an allergic reaction. Once the PRP has been injected, the growth factors contained within the plasma go to work healing and revitalizing the follicles. This allows dormant follicles to once again produce hair, which thickens and strengthens the hair in the treated areas.
Am I a Good Candidate?
Hair restoration with PRP is a good option for anyone who wants thicker hair, but also wants to avoid surgery. You may not make a good candidate for this treatment if you:
- Take medications that thin the blood
- Smoke tobacco products
- Abuse drugs or alcohol
There are certain medical conditions that may also keep you from qualifying for this treatment. It is best to consult with our team of professionals to determine whether you are a good candidate.
